(More customer reviews)The 1703 is a comfortable phone with good voice clarity and some nice features, but can't seem to maintain a reasonably consistent signal. For the first couple days I liked this phone a lot and thought I had found the ideal cordless, but after I got a chance to use it more and really see how it could (or couldn't) perform, I was soon disillusioned and disappointed.
Features are important but the bottom line of any phone is send/receive clarity with a consistent signal that doesn't drop parts of conversations and cut off words. Send/recieve voice quality of the 1703 is very good with no annoying background hiss, noise or voice echoing. However, when experiencing even the slightest interference, it completely cuts in and out, dropping parts of conversations which requires the other party to repeat what they've said. Pretty annoying! Naturally, this happens more when outside, but has also occured in the house near the base unit. In some cases it got really bad. I tried relocating the base, making sure it wasn't plugged into an outlet shared by other appliances or electronics, but didn't help. Since this has happened with other digital phones I tried including DSS, my guess would be this is a problem with digital based phones. I have two older 900MHz analog phones that have never done this. Their reception can get noisy, but they've never cut off parts of conversations like the 1703. I also have an analog 2.4GHz cordless that never cuts off words or interferes with my conversations, and just got a Sony SPP-N1020 analog 900MHz (same price as the 1703) that's been perfect and probably the best cordless I've owned with the best range of any I've used. Even 3 houses down from ours, I've experienced only very slight interference. Pretty commendable. From here on out, I'm sticking with 900MHz analog until technology that's obviously proven better comes along.
