(More customer reviews)I own the Clearsounds Model IL40 amplifier, and it literally saved my job! Even a hearing aid did not enable me to hear loud enough on the phone. After endless adjustments to my hearing aid, my audiologist recommended I try this device on my work phone, and I would never be without it again. In fact, I am ordering a second one to have as a back-up.
The amplifier is an amazingly simple device, but it only works on a phone that permits you to detach the handset cord from the telephone base. (NOTE: If your phone's handset cannot be detached from the phone base, this device will not work for you.) The amplifier comes with a small cord (not shown in the image here) which plugs into the phone base, and the handset cord plugs into the other end of the amplifier. It honestly takes only a minute to install. On the bottom of the amplifier is a compatibility switch that lets you select the "channel" that works with your phone, since phones vary.
A volume control on the amplifier lets you turn the volume up or down. If I step away from my phone and someone else may have to answer it, I turn the volume all the way down. A sticker is also provided for you to place on your phone, if you wish, warning of high volume. There is also a tone control, for more or less base. I have not had to use this feature. I also have not used the loud volume "boost" button. It is designed to eliminate background noise and feedback.
According to the manual, a small light comes on when you pick up the handset to indicate that the 9V battery is working. However, the light on my amplifier stays on all the time that I have the device plugged into the phone. It does go out when the battery is getting low and needs to be replaced.
I should mention that I am able to use this amplifier while wearing my hearing aid, or without it.
I paid $[...] for my amplifier, purchased for me by my audiologist. I value it so highly that I would have paid even more for it. As it turns out, I found it on Amazon.com for considerably less, and will defintely be ordering a second one to insure that I have a spare in case a problem develops with my original amplifier. I can't say how much I value this device. If you, a relative, or a friend has a problem hearing on the phone, seriously consider purchasing the Clearsounds in-line amplifier.
