The KX-TG6632 is a DECT 6.0 "Plus" digital phone kit with an answering machine. The DECT 6.0 network is one of the more advanced cordless frequency systems and is fully digital. Because it is a network, your satellite handsets do not require any physical connection to the base station. They simply sit in a cradle to charge up anywhere in your house and you can expand this system up to a few extra units, although it comes with 2 handsets.
The range for the handset is about 100 feet or more. At 90 feet, I started to hear some minor interference but nothing dramatic. The audio quality during calls is exceptional. There is an Eco Mode that gives up to 13 hours of talk time and decreases/increases signal strength based on the proximity to the base station, but I haven't tried talking for 13 hours straight. It comes with Ni-Mh AAA batteries instead of proprietary battery packs. This gives you the option to buy replacement AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries in most grocery stores, which is both cost effective and convenient! I'm glad to see more OEMs using Ni-MH batteries instead of NiCd, NiMh is cadmium free and has better performance (resistant to the memory effect).
Before I used the handsets, I put the batteries into my special charger to discharge and recharge them to break them in. While my charger said they were fully charged, I put them in the phone and the cradles kept charging them for another hour or so until the orange LED shut off. The Panasonic chargers must be quite an advanced charging circuit to top off the NiMH cells!
The keypad on each handset is fully backlit, which means you can actually see the numbers in total darkness. The LCD is backlit as well by white LEDs and resembles a Nokia cellphone from about 5-8 years ago. The Caller ID system and address book is fully networked, which means all of the handsets in the network will read the same Caller ID logs and the same address book. Changing the address book on one phone will ensure the entire network has access to the updated info. This makes it convenient in not having to set phone numbers in each of the phones.
Unlike other phones, the Panasonic shuts off the charging LED once the batteries are charged. This helps reduce light pollution in your room at night in case you wanted to sleep better. I had an older GE DECT 6.0 phone that kept its blue LED on all the time, and this blue LED was bright enough to act as a night light. I had to use tape to cover it, so it was very thoughtful for Panasonic to use a more subdued orange LED that shuts off after the charging is done.
The ring tone choices are limited, but at least they offer a few creative ring tones based on popular overtures, but it is nothing advanced. The talking Caller ID function is very helpful but the pronunciation programming needs to be improved.
Another awesome feature is that your satellite handsets will play incoming calls to help you screen calls if you're not in the general vicinity of the base station. You can also play messages via the satellite handsets and erase messages as well, so you never have to be at the base station to check/play/erase messages!
The only negative aspect I can report on these phones is the slow interface of the menus. Scrolling through the address book takes a split second longer than I'd like, the same goes for dialing. With my Motorola Droid2 smartphone, I can setup pauses for passcodes to voicemail boxes which dial blisteringly fast. With these Panasonic phones, the auto-dialing is painfully slow and the menus are slow as well. The address book entries also allow a limited number of characters, making it impossible for setting up an entry to automatically log onto certain voice mail boxes or other phone menus. That said, my complaints are minor compared to the performance, ergonomics, and overall design of these phones. I'd highly recommend them to friends, families, and co-workers.
Overall: 4/5 stars, the menu/interface could be faster.
