You are able to control both the volume and the tone so that you can remove any "hiss" from the higher frequencies. It is very loud when cranked up. It has a boost function which is even louder - but I haven't even needed to try it. The battery is voice activated to save energy. Runs on an ordinary 9v battery. The only thing I would have liked better is if it was the color black instead of white.
