(More customer reviews)These headphones are very functional and are worth the price depending on what you want them for. There a few wireless headphone technologies and finding the right one for what you want to do can be a little confusing if you haven't shopped for them before. The three most common technologies are FM, IR (infra-red), and bluetooth.
The first, FM, is the technology these headphones use. They work by plugging an FM transmitter into your music or audio device. The headphones have a built-in FM receiver that lets you listen to the signal. The good things about this technology is that it has a good range and can go through walls. Another nice thing is that FM headphones allow you to pull other FM stations from the air and listen to local FM radio stations. The disadvantages to FM wireless technology is that you'll sometimes hear some static due to interference, particularly if you're going to be moving around, and the receivers are somewhat bulky. So they are ideal for watching TV or listening to radio or MP3's without disturbing others. Being an FM analog signal, music won't sound as good as with with wired or other wireless technologies, but I believe for most listeners the quality is acceptable.
IR technology wireless headphones use an infra-red light signal (similar to most TV remote controllers) to provide the wireless connection. The big disadvantage for this technology is that you need to be within line of sight from the transmitter, however it is a good choice for watching TV in closed quarters, like in the back of car. Be careful purchasing these, many are replacement car headsets and do not always include the transmitter.
Bluetooth technology is lighter and smaller, making it perfect for listening to music while jogging or working out and many units are designed with this purpose in mind. Another plus is that they also work with your phone. A lot of these bluetooth units are mostly for phones, do not come with a transmitter, and are not stereo. Just remember to read the description well before buying if you choose bluetooth.
Having gotten that out of the way, this particular FM unit I'm reviewing is extremely, almost unbelievably, inexpensive. So, the fact that it does not come with an AC adapter (you can buy one separately), or that there are no indicator lights letting you know it's on and draining batteries, or that the instructions aren't thorough enough (the batteries go into a compartment on the outside of the earphone without the controls), can be overlooked. They are reasonably comfortable, probably just as comfortable as the more expensive FM units and sound fine. This unit is a remarkable value.
My guess at why this unit is called "5 in 1"? 1) They have an FM transmitter allowing you to listen to an audio device wireless. 2) The headset can be used without the transmitter to listen to local FM radio stations. 3) The transmitter has a microphone to allow you to use it as a monitor. 4) Use the microphone in the transmitter for web-chat. 5) They come with a cord so you can use them wired.
